The Safety team is responsible for the coordination of all safety requirements and is staffed by four safety officers and they are part of the corporate division within the NSPL Headquarters building.
NSPL remains committed in keeping and maintaining safety standards and requirements. The focus in 2018 was based on the CANSO theme – “Safety Intelligence”. A special day, called the Safety Day, was dedicated to the ongoing promotion, implementation and commitment to advancing Workplace and Aviation Safety.
A new initiative was introduced as part of the Safety Day event called the “Safety Stand Down” (SSD) which saw management and staff discuss openly on Safety related matters with aims of identifying and compiling a list of safety concerns categorized into key focus areas on safety where concerted effort was required for improvement. The SSD initiative is a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to promoting Safety in our business safety policy.
Efforts also continued on the implementation of Safety standards in accordance with the PNG Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) regulatory requirements as part of the Company’s ongoing efforts to optimize safety performance.

Safety Health Check
Safe practices and the provision of safe services remain a key priority in service delivery. As such, the Company conducts a Safety Health Check annually to assess its safety performance. Reporting on the number of safety related incidences is integral to this process. In third quarter of 2017, the Company recorded a total of eight (8) international flight incidents as compared to 23 in the third quarter of 2016. This shows a significant decrease in the number of international air traffic incidents and the company views this as a positive achievement in the reporting of incidents as part of our just culture reporting initiative.
Domestically, by third quarter this year, we recorded 24 domestic flight incidents, which is also a significant improvement from third quarter record in 2016, which was 61.
The focus this year as is always every year is to determine the causal factors and work on improving the areas of concern for better results in the next year. With the implementation of the new CNS/ATM systems and other improvements as part of the Company’ holistic Modernization Program, we anticipate that the number of incidents will continue to be reduced significantly.
